The Marathas are a group of warrior clans originating from the western Deccan Plateau. The Maratha Empire was founded by Shivaji Maharaj in 1674. The Peshwas played a large part in the upliftment of the Maratha rule in India. The Marathas were defeated by the British in three Anglo-Maratha Wars from 1775 to 1818.
